Frequently Asked Questions Regarding The Restylane® Family of Products

Q. Where can products in the Restylane® family be used?

The Restylane® family of products includes Restylane®, Restylane-L®, Perlane®, and Perlane-L®. These products can be used individually to add volume and fullness to the skin to correct moderate to severe facial wrinkles and folds, such as the lines from your nose to the corners of your mouth (nasolabial folds or laugh lines); lipstick lines (the area just below the nose and above the upper lip); the corners of the mouth; and marionette lines (the area that extends downward from the corners of the mouth to the jawline). The safety and effectiveness of products in the Restylane® family for the treatment of anatomic regions other than nasolabial folds have not been established in controlled clinical studies. Patients should be limited to 6.0 mL per treatment.

Q. How often should I be treated with Restylane® and Perlane®?

Restylane® injectable gel has been clinically proven to provide results that last up to 18 months after initial treatment when patients return for follow-up treatment at either 4.5 or 9 months. Perlane® injectable gel results may last up to 6 months after a single treatment. The duration of effect of Resylane-L® and Perlane-L® has not been studied.

Q. When will I see results?

The Restylane®, family of products instantly add volume to help restore youthful contours, so you’ll see results immediately following your treatment.

Q. How much Restylane® injectable gel will I need for full correction?

Due to the individual needs of each patient, it is important to discuss your full correction with your healthcare professional. However, in a clinical study where patients received full correction for their nasolabial folds (lines from the nose to the corners of the mouth) during initial treatment in the Restylane® Regimen, the average volume was 2 to 3 mL per patient.

Q. What should I tell Dr. Tetenbaum before having a treatment with a product from the Restylane® family?

You should tell Dr. Tetenbaum if you have previously suffered from facial cold sores. He or she may prescribe a medication to minimize recurrence. You should also tell her if you have recently used aspirin, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory medications, St. John’s wort, or high doses of vitamin E supplements. These agents may increase bruising and bleeding at the injection site.

Q. Are there any reasons why I should not be treated with a product from the Restylane® family?

Products in the Restylane® family should not be used by people with previous bad allergies, particularly to certain microorganisms known as gram-positive bacteria, or by people with previous bad allergies to drugs who have required in-hospital treatment. These products should not be used by people with bleeding disorders. Injections should not be made anywhere except the skin or just under the skin. Restylane-L® and Perlane-L® should not be used by people with a known allergy to lidocaine. If you are pregnant, breastfeeding, or under 18 years, you should not use products in the Restylane® family.

Q. What are some of the common side effects?

After your treatment, you may have some swelling, redness, pain, bruising, and tenderness. This will normally last less than seven days.

Q. How does my healthcare professional know which product in the Restylane® family of products to use?

Your healthcare professional will decide which product is right for you based on an evaluation of your facial wrinkles and folds. Products in the Restylane® family help restore youthful contours to the skin to smooth away moderate to severe facial wrinkles and folds. Restylane® adds structural support and lift – Perlane® is appropriate for deeper injection to add volume – Restylane-L® and Perlane-L® with lidocaine help reduce discomfort during treatment

Q. How are products in the Restylane® family administered?

Restylane® products are injected directly into the skin in small amounts by an ultrafine needle. Before treatment, talk to your doctor about pain management.

Q. Is any of the material left in the skin after it has dissolved?

No. Over time the products are broken down and eliminated by the body.

Q. Do the injections hurt?

As with all injections, some patients may experience discomfort. To increase your comfort, your doctor will assess your need for pain management and determine an approach that is right for you. Restylane-L® and Perlane-L® with lidocaine help reduce discomfort during treatment.

Q. What are products in the Restylane® family made of?

Restylane-L® was the first aesthetic dermal filler in the U.S. made of nonanimal-based hyaluronic acid. Hyaluronic acid is also found naturally in the human body and provides volume and fullness to the skin. The hyaluronic acid in Restylane® products has been modified to last longer than the body’s hyaluronic acid.

Q. How do the Restylane® family of products differ from botulinum neurotoxins?

Botulinum neurotoxins (Botox® and Dysport®) and Restylane® products are used to correct wrinkles in different ways. Restylane® products are aesthetic dermal fillers injected into the skin, adding volume to smooth wrinkles, such as the lines from your nose to the corners of your mouth (nasolabial folds). In contrast, Botox® and Dysport® are injected into the muscles between and above your eyebrows to prevent contraction of muscles that cause frown lines.
